Two of the world's communications giants have agreed to merge their UK operations. Liberty Global will combine its Virgin Media UK broadband network with Telefonica's O2 UK mobile business.

Sky launches its own mobile service

Entertainment company Sky has announced what it’s calling “the UK's most flexible mobile service”.

Customers with another Sky service will be able to sign up for Sky Mobile from mid-December, with a full launch expected in early 2017.

Predictions for 2016: Network Function Virtualisation, 4G throttling and video calling

Mark Windle, head of marketing at OpenCloud, predicts that this year’s reduction in the number of traditional telecoms operators in some countries will provide an opportunity for other operators to innovate and capture market share in 2016.

He says next year will be a year of rapid change for telecoms… whether it’s MVNO disruption, competitive tariff pricing or simply defence from the ‘dark art’ of hacking.

Google planning its own MVNO

Sundar Pichai, senior vice president in charge of Google’s products, has told an audience at Mobile World Congress that the search and advertising business is planning to launch a US-based virtual mobile network.

Rumours have previously suggested Google has been talking to Spring and T-Mobile about a possible partnership.
