UK telecoms operator EE has launched a new home TV service that lets customers use smartphones and tablets as remote controls for their home television.

EE TV, which will be available later this autumn, is based on a ‘smart box’ that plugs into a TV set via an HDMI socket. It’s equipped with a 1TB hard drive for recording, along with 4 Freeview tuners and WiFi connectivity.

Figures from court documents show that Samsung paid Microsoft around $1 billion (£622 million) in a year to use the Android operating system.

The two companies signed a patent licensing agreement in 2011, with Samsung agreeing to pay Microsoft, although the amount was undisclosed at the time.
