The Acer Group has launched a new online multimedia and application store called alive. It promises “a unique starting point for users, allowing them to browse, search, access, purchase, stream or download and play any type of digital content”. The service aims to deliver regularly-updated content that can be personalised for each user’s interests.

Acer plans to pre-install the alive interface on all new devices and offer it as a download to existing Acer Group customers. It’ll be made available to selected users in the UK and Italy next month, with a global roll-out starting in the first quarter of 2011. alive will be available across all Acer’s consumer devices worldwide, including netbooks, notebooks, smartphones and tablets.

In a statement, Acer said “alive is much more than a traditional content store, as a large breadth of free and paid content is presented to users via real-time feeds directly managed by content providers. Content updates are as instant and discoverable as Twitter feeds, allowing users to be regularly notified when there’s something new and interesting for them to discover.”

The back end of the store will be supported by Buongiorno. AKQA has provided the user experience and Acxiom will work with Acer on the recommendation engine.
