A new forecast from ABI Research expects almost 20% of annual smartphone shipments to include facial recognition capabilities by the end of this year. The technology is already part of the Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean versions of Android, with Samsung’s Galaxy SIII being one of the most high-profile smartphones to feature face recognition technology at the moment.
In five years’ time, annual shipments of smartphones and tablets with facial recognition technology are expected to have reached 665 million devices.
Josh Flood, senior analyst at ABI Research, said “Facial recognition technology has improved drastically over the last 10 years and accuracy is almost always above 90%. That said, lighting conditions and facial expressions can sometimes cause problems with the recognition. However, the improvements in camera resolution and processing power utilized by mobile devices has helped greatly.”
