Taiwan’s Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute (MIC) has calculated there’ll be 6.5 million Android-powered smartphones by the end of this year, with shipments expected to increase to 31.8 million devices in 2013. The MIC also says there’ll be over 94 million other Android-equipped devices, such as portable computers, in use by 2013.
According to MIC analyst Kate Huang, this could push Symbian to open its system more quickly – it revealed details of its kernel earlier this week – and might even result in lower licensing fees for Windows Mobile. [Press release]
