Apple iPhone now allows VoIP apps to use 3G

Hidden away by yesterday's Apple iPad news was the story that Apple's iPhone software developer kit now allows applications to use Voice-over-IP via 3G. Previous VoIP apps were restricted to using WiFi.

First off the blocks is iCall, currently the only VoIP application that functions on the iPhone and iPod Touch over mobile 3G networks. It's available to download from the Apple App Store.

Arlo Gilbert, iCall's CEO, said "I applaud Apple's decision to allow iCall to extend its functionality beyond WiFi and onto the 3G networks. This heralds a new era for VoIP applications on mobile platforms, especially for iCall and our free calling model. I hope that now more developers will begin using our VoIP as a platform to integrate VoIP into their applications."
