Arriva introduces mobile tickets for regional bus services

UK transport company Arriva has introduced an m-ticket service across its regional network of around 1,000 bus routes. Customers in England, Scotland and Wales are now able to buy daily, weekly and four-weekly tickets via their mobile phones. It's believed to be the largest deployment of its kind in the world.

Arriva has worked with Concept Data Technologies to create the m-ticketing service, which works via a free application available to download on most GPRS-equipped phones. Payment is made through the application on a registered credit/debit card or by buying credit from any PayPoint outlet.

There's a 10% discount for customers buying four-weekly saver tickets by mobile phone. [Press release]

Good idea but it does not allow iphone and blackberry users to subscribe to the service until early 2010 which is a bit daft if they want to be a world leader on this type of service
