America’s largest bookshop chain, Barnes & Noble, has launched its own online digital book store. The eBookstore will let customers buy electronic books that can be downloaded to PCs, Macs, Apple iPhones and BlackBerry devices. In addition it’s going to sell a dedicated eBook device from early next year: the Plastic Logic eReader.

The wide variety of available devices is seen as a response to Amazon’s 3G-enabled Kindle eBook reader, which is available in the USA and is expected to arrive in the UK by Christmas if a mobile network deal can be agreed. [B&N press release]
