BT has launched a new application that’ll let its fixed-line customers use an Apple iPhone for calls, with charges added to their home account. The SmartTalk app is free and will work over WiFi or a mobile data connection. Calls made via the app - whether in the UK or abroad - are billed as if the user was calling from their BT home phone.
Customers can potentially save money when calling home from abroad, when calling 0845 or 0870 numbers, when calling numbers included in their BT tariff allowance or when calling other mobile phones. It’ll also work via WiFi if there’s no credit on a pay-as-you-go smartphone.
John Petter, managing director of BT’s consumer business, said “This is a really exciting breakthrough that means you can take your BT calling plan with you and continue saving money when you’re away from home, either in the UK or abroad. BT SmartTalk helps you get even more value from your BT package and much more from your smartphone. At last you can actually call freephone 0800 numbers for free from mobiles and get inclusive 0845 and 0870 calls too. And of course, you can take advantage of BT Wi-fi which gives you access to a massive network of 7.5 million hotspots around the world.”
