Department for Transport wants mobile tickets

The UK’s Department for Transport has published a consultation document that outlines the department’s vision for the future of ‘smart’ ticketing and asks for views on the subject. It’s aimed at transport operators, local authorities, passenger groups and smartcard companies, although anyone is able to comment.

Part of the DoT’s vision is that “tickets will be loaded onto mobile phones instead of smartcards, allowing people to buy their ticket over the air, check timetables and real time travel information and view their stored tickets all on their phone”.
