Driver jailed for texting when driving
Labour peer Lord Ahmed has been jailed for sending text messages while driving on the M1 on Christmas Day 2007. A few minutes after sending the texts he hit a car that had crashed on the outside lane of the motorway. The driver who had stopped was killed, although the judge at his trial pointed out that the texting was not connected to this fatal accident. Lord Ahmed has been convicted of dangerous driving and jailed for 12 weeks. He was also banned from driving for a year and ordered to pay costs. [Source: BBC News]
