Falling ringtone sales have messed up the entire mobile music market

More and more consumers are able to create their own ringtones – and that’s led to a drop in ringtone sales that has affected the entire mobile music market, according to SNL Kagan. They say ringtone sales in the USA fell 24% in 2008, causing overall US mobile music revenue to drop year-on-year – the first time any US mobile content category has ever fallen. Last year ringtones accounted for 63% of the total US mobile music market – down from 80% just three years before – with ringback tones, full-track music downloads and ad-funded streaming now expected to become the next growth sectors in the market.
