Google Latitude, the mobile location-tracking service that lets users share where they are, now offers the option of ‘checking in’ at a specific location. It’s a feature that’s been introduced today on version 5.1 of Google Maps 5.1 for Android, with the iPhone app due to be updated shortly.
Features include check-in notifications when you arrive at your destination and automatic check-ins to chosen locations. Latitude will also automatically note when you leave somewhere.
Rather like other location-based social networks, Google Latitude awards users with a certain status such as ‘regular’ or ‘VIP’ depending on the frequency of their visits.
