Google has admitted that, while adoption of the Android operating system has been better than expected, the Google web store for Android phones hasn’t gone so well.
In a blog post, Google’s engineering VP Andy Rubin said the web store had “remained a niche channel for early adopters” but that “many customers like a hands-on experience before buying a phone”.
The company says it’ll stop selling handsets online when the Nexus One is available in more stores. After this happens, the web store will transformed into a showcase for Android phones.
