Vodafone UK says it now has 500,000 customers on its ‘Red 4G’ plans, just six months after launching its 4G mobile phone service. It’s currently providing 4G service to 36% of the UK population.
Figures from the network show that the average 4G customer is doing twice as much music and video streaming, video calling, online shopping and online banking than those on 3G tariffs.
In a separate announcement, Vodafone Group said it’ll be launching 4G roaming in the summer to 18 countries worldwide, more than any other mobile operator. The cost will be no more than existing 3G roaming.
It already offers 4G roaming on its own networks in Greece, Italy, Portugal, Romania and Spain. This’ll be extended to Australia, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, South Africa and the UK in the next few months. In addition, cross-network 4G roaming is scheduled for Austria, Belgium, France, Japan, Singapore, South Korea and Switzerland.
Paolo Bertoluzzo, Chief Commercial and Operations Officer for Vodafone Group, said “4G is great for travellers, whether they are on business or on holiday. Much faster, simpler to use and often less expensive than typical, hotel wi-fi connections anywhere in Europe, 4G roaming will give our customers high-speed connections for video, music streaming, web surfing, working and much more anywhere, from the airport to the cafe.”
