HP, which decided in August to stop producing webOS tablets and phones, has announced it will contribute its webOS software to the open source community. The code of webOS will be made available under an open source licence, while HP says it intends to remain active in the development and support of webOS.
Meg Whitman, president and chief executive officer of HP, said “webOS is the only platform designed from the ground up to be mobile, cloud-connected and scalable. By contributing this innovation, HP unleashes the creativity of the open source community to advance a new generation of applications and devices.”
HP will also contribute the Enyo webOS application framework to the open source community.
