Chinese telecommunications manufacturer Huawei has announced a new tablet device called MediaPad.

It has a 7-inch ‘HD’ screen - promising a higher pixel density than the iPad 2 - and will run v3.2 of the Android operating system on a 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm chip.

Huawei has become best-known for providing operator-branded devices, although it’s launching a range of own-brand smartphone and tablet devices this year. It’s committed to becoming one of the world’s top five handset vendors by 2013.

The company recently signed a pan-European distribution and fulfilment agreement with UK-based 20:20 Mobile. 20:20 Mobile will supply Huawei smartphones, tablets, mobile broadband dongles and mobile WiFi hotspots to specialist and non-specialist channels.

Victor Xu, Chief Marketing Officer of Huawei Device, said “With the Huawei MediaPad, we are demonstrating yet again that design, functionality and performance is within anyone’s reach. The 7-inch tablet remains the preferred size for portability and Honeycomb Android 3.2 is dedicated to enhance the full potential of 7-inch tablets. Huawei is very pleased to be the first to offer this package to consumers globally. The MediaPad opens up new worlds of entertainment for consumers by removing the barriers to tablet ownership, enabling access to a truly high-quality mobile entertainment experience fully integrated with cloud-based internet content.”

Availability of the Huawei MediaPad is expected in Q3 2011.
