Rugged computer manufacturer Getac has launched what it describes as the world’s most rugged Android tablet. The Z710 has a 7-inch scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass display and meets MIL-STD 810G / IP65 certification for shock, dust and moisture.

It’s even possible to operate the Z710’s capacitive touchscreen using gloves, thanks to Getac’s LumiBond technology - which also offers a better viewing angle and daylight readability than other rugged tablets.

Certified to withstand drops of up to six feet and extreme temperatures from -20° C to 50° C, the Getac Z710 has a toughened casing that’s just over an inch thick and weighs 800g. Yet it’s equipped with all the standard features of a media tablet, including a 5 megapixel rear-facing camera and a front-facing webcam.

Connectivity options include 3G, WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS.

Jim Rimay, Getac’s President, said “We built the Z710 rugged Android tablet with the end user in mind. Many field service sectors, such as public utilities, logistics, and automotive, require communications and data capture devices to operate in harsh environments and we designed the Z710 to provide the support these professionals need in the field.”

The Z710 is backed by a 3-year warranty and currently runs Android v2.3.

Pricing for the WiFi-only version is expected to start at around $1,499 (£942) with the 3G-equipped version starting at $1,799 (£1,131). Shipping will begin next month.
