A survey of US consumers by ABI Research has found that around two-thirds of app users have spent money on at least one application, with these people spending an average of $14 per month. However, a closer analysis reveals a wide difference between lower and higher spending consumers.

Aapo Markkanen, senior analyst at ABI Research, said “The median amount among the consumers who spend money on apps is much lower than the average, just $7.50 per month. This reflects the disproportionate role of big spenders as a revenue source. The highest-spending 3% of all app users account for nearly 20% of the total spend, while over 70% spends either nothing or very little.”

The company notes that money-making apps have tended to be business utilities or iOS games with in-app purchasing.
