The latest figures from ABI Research take an in-depth look at the estimated 1.15 billion mobile handsets shipped worldwide last year.
81% of those devices were either enhanced phones or smartphones. 56% of new handset models in 2009 were 3.5G-ready devices, while 48% of new models in 2009 were GPS equipped… compared with just 29% in 2008.
Just over half of all phones (51%) were one-piece 'bar' designs. Sliders accounted for 27% of the market and folding 'clamshell' phones accounted for 19% market share.
ABI also says Microsoft Windows Mobile had the highest adoption rate among operating systems of newly launched models, with Symbian taking second place.
