LG Electronics says it’ll replace all conventional magnesium inside its mobile phones with ‘eco-magnesium’ by 2012.
Eco-magnesium is a ‘clean’ magnesium alloy that was developed by the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology with funding from the South Korean government. Practically no sulphur hexafluoride is created during its production; the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change cites this as one of the most potent greenhouse gas ever encountered. Replacing conventional magnesium in mobile phones with eco-magnesium will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by four kilograms for every handset LG produces; a factor of approximately 24,000 during the die casting process.
