London police launch text service

The City of London Police, which is responsible for the safety of everyone in the 'Square Mile', has launched a text message contact service. It's aimed at people with hearing or speech impediments but it is available to all City residents, replacing the current typetalk and textphone services. Anyone with a non-urgent need to contact the police can send a text message to 07940 500 500 with details of their name, location, where the incident is taking place and details of what is happening. A confirmation SMS reply is sent when police have received the message.
