Microsoft announces closure of old Windows Marketplace for Mobile

Microsoft has announced the planned closure of its application store for Windows Mobile 6 devices. The Windows Mobile 6.x Marketplace service will no longer be available for application purchases or downloads from 9th May 2012, although any software that’s already been downloaded will keep working.

Launched three years ago, the Windows Marketplace for Mobile offered apps for phones running Windows Mobile 6.0 and above. However, it became obsolescent when the Windows Phone operating system and its associated Windows Phone Marketplace were introduced.

In an email to customers, Microsoft notes that Windows Mobile applications and games may still be available directly from developers or via third-party marketplaces.
