Microsoft announces Windows 10 operating system for desktop, mobile, game consoles and the Internet of Things

Microsoft has unveiled the successor to its Windows 8 operating system. It’s called Windows 10 - not Windows 9 - and is designed to work with a wide range of devices, including Xbox gaming consoles, PCs, smartphones, tablets and M2M devices.

A technical preview for software developers is available from 1st October.

According to Microsoft, Windows 10 adapts to the device that’s being used and will run across the broadest range of devices ever. A single app store will be available for developers and consumers.

Terry Myerson, executive vice president of the Operating Systems group at Microsoft, said “Windows 10 represents the first step of a whole new generation of Windows, unlocking new experiences to give customers new ways to work, play and connect. This will be our most comprehensive operating system and the best release Microsoft has ever done for our business customers, and we look forward to working together with our broader Windows community to bring Windows 10 to life in the months ahead.”

Features include the return of a ‘start’ menu, which was removed in Windows 8, and the introduction of multiple desktops for different purposes.
