Microsoft reveals new Surface tablet devices for Windows

Own-brand rival to Apple iPad

Microsoft has revealed a range of own-brand computers called Surface. At an event a few hours ago it demonstrated two Windows tablets:  one with an ARM processor running the forthcoming Windows RT platform and another with an Intel Core processor featuring Windows 8 Pro. The Windows RT model will be available in the US when Window 8 is launched later this year, while the Windows 8 Pro model will follow around three months later. There’s no mention of UK availability at the moment.

Both devices are coated in what Microsoft are calling VaporMg, which uses magnesium to produce a tough surface that’s less than 1mm thick. They’ll also have a built-in stand and a clip-on keyboard, front-facing and rear-facing cameras, USB connectivity and a memory card slot.

Full details of weights and dimensions haven’t been confirmed. The Windows RT tablet is expected to be 676g and 9.3mm deep with a 10.6-inch display; it’ll come in 32GB or 64GB versions. The Windows 8 Pro computer will be thicker and heavier, with a choice between 64GB and 128GB. Microsoft says pricing “is expected to be competitive with a comparable ARM tablet or Intel Ultrabook-class PC”.
