Microsoft unveils Windows 10 for PC, tablet and mobile

Microsoft has unveiled more details about its next generation of Windows, which was first revealed last September. Windows 10 will be installed on new devices, will be available to buy and will also be available as a free upgrade to customers who move from Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 within the first year.

New features on Windows 10 - there’s no ‘Windows 9’ - will include the Cortana personal digital assistant for PCs and tablets, a new web browser, XBox Live gaming integration and a new version of Office.

Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s CEO, said “Windows 10 marks the beginning of the more personal computing era in the mobile-first, cloud-first world. Our ambition is for the 1.5 billion people who are using Windows today to fall in love with Windows 10 and for billions more to decide to make Windows home.”

Microsoft also talked about plans for a wearable ‘holographic’ computer - Microsoft HoloLens - that’s capable of using new augmented reality features in Windows 10.

A new Technical Preview for Windows 10 will be available for PCs from next week and for phones in February.
