Mobile accessory revenues will be worth £39 billion by 2017

The market for mobile accessories will grow at an average rate of 10.5% per year from 2012 through until 2017, according to figures from ABI Research. It says the total revenue generated worldwide by mobile accessories will reach $62 billion (£39 billion) in 2017.

However, revenue from non-smartphone accessories will decline at a 4% compound annual growth rate over the five-year period as fewer featurephones are sold.

Michael Morgan, senior mobile devices analyst at ABI Research, said “Because smartphones tend to generate greater accessory revenues per device, it is believed that smartphones will drive 80% of the aftermarket revenues in 2017. Among the thirteen accessory product segments tracked by ABI Research, protective cases and stereo wired headsets are predicted to show the highest growth rates of 18.2% and 15.6% respectively. ABI Research notes that mono wired headsets will show a decline in shipments of 1.3% as consumers increasingly seek accessories that will maximize the media consumption capabilities of their handsets.”

Average prices across the category are expected to remain stable or even grow as accessories become smarter over thenext few years.
