Mobile Cloud application revenue to hit £5.9 billion by 2014

A few months ago we heard from ABI Research, which predicted the number of mobile subscribers worldwide using cloud computing - storage or applications provided over the internet - would grow from 42.8 million people in 2008 to over 998 million (nearly 19% of all mobile subscribers) in 2014.

Now Juniper Research has put some figures to those predictions. It says annual revenue from cloud-based mobile applications will reach nearly $9.5 billion (£5.9 billion) by 2014. The Juniper Research report found that enterprise applications will account for the majority of revenues over the next five years, with businesses increasingly seeking to capitalise on the ability of 'Platform as a Service' providers to offer scalable, flexible data storage solutions. However, it also warned that many enterprise customers remained wary of entrusting their personal data to remote third-parties.
