Last week we reported on figures from ABI Research, which said 258 million mobile phones were shipped during the first three months of 2009 - an 11% drop year-on-year. Today IDC and Strategy Analytics have both released similar reports. IDC says mobile phone manufacturers shipped 244.8 million units in the first quarter of 2009, 15.8% lower than the same period in 2008. And Strategy Analytics reckons 245 million mobiles were shipped worldwide in Q1 2009, down 13% year-on-year. Whichever figures you choose, it’s not good news for the mobile industry.
