The National Literacy Trust charity has published research that shows more young people own a mobile phone than own a book. The study of over 17,000 young people in the UK reveals that 86% own mobile phones while only 73% have their own books.
There's a strong link between young people’s reading ability and their access to books at home, according to the research. Apparently 80% of children who read above the expected level for their age have books of their own - but only 58% who read below their expected level have books of their own.
The research has been published to coincide the National Literacy Trust's Tell Me a Story campaign, which runs alongside National Family Week next week.
