New smartphone operating systems expected to gain traction

A new report from Juniper Research shows that new smartphone operating systems are expected to gain ground in niche areas during the next few years. Mobile platforms such as Asha, Sailfish and HTML5-based systems are likely to increase their market share thanks to cost innovation and local knowledge. By 2018, new players are expected to have 13% of total mobile operating system market share.

However, the global smartphone market is still expected to be dominated by Android and Apple iOS.

In 2018, Apple and Samsung are expected to ship 17% more smartphones than all manufacturers’ global smartphone shipments last year. That’ll be almost 800 million devices between the two companies compared with 677 million last year.

The report also anticipates significant growth across emerging markets such as the Indian Subcontinent and China, driven by low-cost smartphones tailored for the local market.
