The Director of Public Prosecutions, Keir Starmer QC, says there’ll be no new charges following an investigation into ‘voicemail hacking’ at the News of the World newspaper. He says a former reporter had refused to co-operate with police about claims he’d made in the New York Times, while a number of other witnesses either refused to co-operate with the police investigation, only provided short statements or denied any knowledge of wrongdoing.
As a result, he said “there is no admissible evidence upon which the CPS could properly advise the police to bring criminal charges”.
