Nokia’s support for the Microsoft Windows Phone operating system will see the OS overtake Apple’s smartphone market share in 2015, according to a new report from iSuppli. The IHS iSuppli Mobile & Wireless Communications Service talks about the new 4G LTE Nokia Lumia 900 triggering a ‘smartphone renaissance’ for the two companies.

Although Android’s share of the smartphone market is expected to increase to over 58% by 2015, Apple’s iOS share is predicted to fall from 18% this year to 16.6% in 2015. That will let Windows Phone overtake it, jumping from 1.9% last year to 16.7% in 2015.

Francis Sideco, senior principal analyst for consumer and communications at IHS, said “The introduction of the Lumia 900 shows that Nokia believes the road back to smartphone dominance runs through North America. And the way to win North America is through its operator channels. In the past, Nokia always introduced new technologies in its home European market first.”

Half of all Windows Phone smartphones sold this year are expected to be Nokia devices, according to IHS iSuppli.
