Nokia is taking Apple to court in the USA for infringing ten of its GSM, UMTS (3G) and WLAN (WiFi) patents. It says it’s invested over €40 billion in Research and Development during the last twenty years and has licensed its technology to around 40 companies. The patents in question cover wireless data, speech coding, security and encryption and – according to Nokia - are infringed by all Apple iPhone models produced since the iPhone was introduced. Nokia says Apple has refused to agree appropriate terms for Nokia's intellectual property and, in the words of Ilkka Rahnasto, the company’s Vice President for Legal & Intellectual Property, “is attempting to get a free ride on the back of Nokia's innovation”.
