A new report from Juniper Research anticipates the number of mobile phone users making payments for digital goods reaching 2.5 billion worldwide by 2015. That’s a 40% increase from this year’s forecast of 1.8 billion. The largest region for mobile payments will be the Far East & China, where 30% of the 2015 total will be found.
Key growth sectors are expected to include mobile tickets for transport and entertainment.
David Snow, senior analyst at Juniper Research, said “Whilst the mobile payments sector offers substantial growth opportunities, it needs to be seen by innovative players as a platform from which to develop new value added applications and services such as personalised mobile coupons, loyalty schemes, and novel augmented reality offerings.”
The report also warns that security is likely to become an issue as fraud levels increase.
