RAJAR, the official body in charge of measuring radio audiences in the UK, has published figures that show how people listen to the radio online and via mobile phones.
It says 2.2 million smartphone owners have downloaded a radio app, with 44% of them using their radio apps at least once a week. Overall, 6.6 million adults say they’ve listened to the radio via mobile phone. The majority – 53% – chose the station from an FM preset, suggesting that online listeners are still in the minority.
Other figures from RAJAR say 16.3 million people in the UK have listened to radio via the internet and 8.1 million adults have downloaded a podcast.
Christel Swift, research manager for RAJAR, said “Listening to radio via smartphones has grown rapidly over the past year or so and this is reflected in the number of people who claim to have downloaded a radio app, which now stands at just over a quarter of smartphone owners. This development is excellent news for radio on the go and represents a real opportunity for the radio industry.”
