Preliminary results from Motorola suggest mobile shipments down, smartphone shipments up

MotorolaMotorola Mobility has announced preliminary results for the fourth quarter of 2011, with full financial results due on 26th January 2012.

It says it shipped around 10.5 million mobile devices in the quarter, of which approximately 5.3 million were smartphones. Figures for Q3 2011 were 11.6 million mobile devices, including 4.8 million smartphones and approximately 100,000 Motorola XOOM tablets.

The company says its Q4 results were affected by “the increased competitive environment in the Mobile Device business and higher legal costs associated with ongoing Intellectual Property litigations”.

Google’s acquisition of Motorola Mobility is still expected to be completed in the next few months.
