Earlier this week Qualcomm announced a new quad-core Snapdragon chipset for next-generation tablets and mobile computing devices. The flagship chipset - the APQ8064 based on the ‘Krait’ micro-architecture code - will achieve speeds of up to 2.5GHz per core. It’s expected to offer 12-times the available performance as well as 75% lower power than the first generation of Snapdragon processors.

The Snapdragon APQ8064 chip will support a higher device spec than existing mobile chips, handling a larger screen resolution, more complex operating systems, multi-tasking, multi-channel audio, HD gaming and stereoscopic 3D imagery.

Samples of the APQ8064 are expected to be available early next year.

Also demonstrated this week was a new Tegra quad-core chip from rival NVIDIA. ‘Project Kal-El’ is the company’s first mobile quad-core processor and contains a new 12-core GeForce GPU. NVIDIA says it expects production to start in August.
