Record quarterly revenue for Microsoft

Microsoft Corp. has announced quarterly revenue of $17.41 billion (£10.8 billion) for the period that ended 31st March 2012, which is a 6% increase year-on-year. Operating income was $6.37 billion, up 12% from the same quarter in 2011. Net income was down slightly to $5.11 billion.

Steve Ballmer, chief executive officer at Microsoft, said “We’re driving toward exciting launches across the entire company, while delivering strong financial results. With the upcoming release of new Windows 8 PCs and tablets, the next version of Office, and a wide array of products and services for the enterprise and consumers, we will be delivering exceptional value to all our customers in the year ahead.”

The Server & Tools business posted $4.57 billion in third-quarter revenue, up 14%, while the Microsoft Business Division was up 9% to $5.81 billion. The Windows and Windows Live Division posted revenue of $4.62 billion, up 4% increase, and the Online Services Division reported a 6% revenue increase to $707 million.

However, the Entertainment & Devices Division posted revenue of $1.62 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 16% that was blamed on the gaming console market.
