Research from Strategy Analytics says worldwide shipments of smartphones were up 75% last year, almost reaching 293 million units. This compares with 151 million smartphones in 2008 and 175 million in 2009.

Tom Kang, Director at Strategy Analytics, said “Apple was once again the fastest growing brand among the big 3 smartphone players, as it almost doubled volumes on an annual basis, maintained a small quarterly lead over RIM, and captured 17 percent global marketshare.”

However, the figures also show market share for the two largest smartphone manufacturers – Nokia and RIM – slipping as devices from Samsung, Motorola, HTC and Sony Ericsson gained popularity.
