Research In Motion has announced results for its third financial quarter, with BlackBerry smartphone shipments up 40% year-on-year to a record 14.2 million devices. Around 5.1 million new BlackBerry subscriber accounts were added in the quarter, giving the company over 55 million users.
Revenue for Q3 of the 2011 financial year was $5.49 billion, up 19% from the previous quarter and up 40% from the same quarter of last year. Approximately 82% of this came from devices, 15% from service, and 3% from software and other revenue.

RIM has also appointed co-Chief Executive Officers Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis as co-chairmen of the board. John Richardson remains as lead independent director of RIM. Mr Balsillie had previously served as chairman until stepping down in 2007.
