Samsung calls its new 3G touch-screen phone ‘Preston’

Samsung has just announced the official launch of two new touch-screen phones that were being talked about earlier this year at the Mobile World Congress. One is the Samsung Star (or Samsung S5230), a 2.5G phone that’s already changed its name to the Samsung Tocco Lite for its UK appearance. The other, the 3G version, is the Samsung Preston (or S5600 if you prefer). Is that ‘Preston’ as in the Lancashire city, the Sussex-born pop singer or the evil animated robot dog?

Anyway, both phones are clearly a big deal for Samsung, with 2 million pre-orders for the Samsung Star and Samsung’s head of Mobile Communications division saying he is “pretty confident that the products will be one of our historical best selling mobiles”. My money’s on a different name for the S5600 if it’s launched in the UK; it’s already calling itself the Samsung Halley in Italy. [Press release]
