Samsung Electronics boosts WiFi speed to five times faster

Samsung Electronics says it’s developed WiFi technology for the 60GHz spectrum that’s capable of transferring data five times faster than existing consumer equipment.

The new Samsung technology, which uses the 802.11ad ‘WiGig’ standard, is said to eliminate interference between WiFi channels. However, unlike the lower-frequency 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi services, 60GHz frequencies are easily affected by obstructions and even by the presence of oxygen in the air.

Data speeds of up to 4.6Gbps (575MB per second) have been achieved by Samsung, which is more than a five-fold increase from the current maximum of 866Mbps. This effectively allows real-time HD video streaming and the download of an entire movie within seconds.

Kim Chang Yong, Head of the DMC R&D Center at Samsung Electronics, said “Samsung has successfully overcome the barriers to the commercialization of 60GHz millimeter-wave band Wi-Fi technology, and looks forward to commercializing this breakthrough technology. New and innovative changes await Samsung’s next-generation devices, while new possibilities have been opened up for the future development of Wi-Fi technology.”

Commercial 802.11ad WiFi products from Samsung are expected next year.
