Samsung enters MWC with Android-powered TV hub and new Galaxy Note tablet

Samsung has revealed two new products ahead of Mobile World Congress in Barcelona: an 8-inch Android tablet and an Android-powered smart TV device.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 has an 8-inch 1280x800 display running on a 1.6GHz quad-core processor. It’s expected to be available from the second quarter of this year.

JK Shin, President of the IT & Mobile Communications Division at Samsung Electronics, said “Back in 2010 the launch of the first Samsung GALAXY Tab with 7 inch screen opened a new chapter in the mobile industry. Now almost three years later, Samsung continues to evolve the sector that meets the demands of modern life. The GALAXY Note 8.0 breaths fresh life into the category as it delivers the perfect fusion of portability and everyday productivity - the result is a pioneering, pocket-sized solution that enhances and enriches our everyday lives, whether at work or play.”

In addition, the company has announced a home entertainment hub called Samsung HomeSync. This combines 1TB of network storage with the ability to stream video, Android games and TV shows from a Samsung Galaxy smartphone or tablet to the television. This will be available from April 2013.

As well as introducing these two new products, Samsung is also launching its TV Discovery service. Consumers with a compatible Samsung mobile device or Smart TV can receive personalised recommendations and search real-time programme information from television channels, video-on-demand services and YouTube. Initially it’ll work with Acetrax, Wuaki, MovieMax, FilmIn, Chili, Pathé and SF Anytime in Europe, plus Netflix and Blockbuster in the USA.

TV Discovery can also be used to turn a tablet into a remote control for other connected media devices. It’s launching first on Samsung Smart TVs in the UK, followed by new mobile devices in the second quarter of 2013.
