Should 3G masts become more powerful?, asks Ofcom

Here's a subject that's likely to cause (the usual) polarised opinions if or when it reaches the mainstream media. Ofcom has published a consultation on increasing the power limits of 3G mobile licences to improve mobile phone coverage in the UK.

It's doing this because Vodafone UK asked if it could be allowed to increase the permitted power limits on its 3G licence, based on its experiences using higher-powered equipment in Germany. Ofcom talked to the other 3G networks, all of whom said they'd support the proposal and would like the same condition applied to all licence-holders.

The consultation period closes on Friday 19th March 2010; Ofcom plans to publish its response shortly afterwards.
