Financial website 24/7 Wall St has calculated that Apple's App Store has lost $459 million (£280 million) to piracy since it opened in July 2008. The money has been lost by Apple and also by the companies that use the App Store to sell software for the iPhone and iPod touch.

Some companies have reported that as few as 5% of users have a legitimate copy of their software. The total figure of $459 million was reached by estimating an average piracy rate of 75%, an average application cost of $3 and assuming that 10% of illegal software users would have bought a legitimate copy if they'd not obtained a free one.
