Starbucks USA sees 26 million mobile transactions within a year

The Starbucks Coffee Company says it’s conducted over 26 million transactions this year via its mobile app. The payment application was launched across the USA in January, with a Canadian app introduced last month and the UK set to launch on 5th January 2012.

Customers can spend the balance on their prepaid Starbucks Card by showing an on-screen barcode generated by the iPhone and Android app.

Adam Brotman, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Starbucks Digital Ventures, said “2011 was a year of great mobile exploration and expansion for Starbucks and an opportunity to give our customers a new way to connect with Starbucks through a variety of mobile experiences. The customer response to our mobile apps has been phenomenal. Not only are they using their phone as a wallet, but as a connection point to Starbucks as they manage their Starbucks Card accounts, send eGifts and get into the holiday spirit with the Starbucks Cup Magic app.”

Conventional and mobile Starbucks Cards are currently used for 1 in 4 Starbucks transactions in the US. Since January 2011, $110.5 million (£70.7 million) has been loaded onto Starbucks Cards directly through the mobile app.
