Steve Jobs reveals Apple iOS 5 and iCloud

As promised, Apple CEO Steve Jobs has opened the company’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference with a series of announcements.

The next version of the iPhone and iPad operating system - iOS 5 - will have more than 200 new features when it’s released this autumn. There’ll be Twitter integration, a separate area for notifications, Newstand for newspaper and magazine subscriptions, a text-only option for viewing websites, the ability to create location-specific reminders, over-the-air software updates and an instant messaging service (not unlike BlackBerry Messenger).

The new free iCloud service will replace MobileMe, storing and synchronising email, contacts, documents, iTunes purchases, cameraphone photos, settings and application data across multiple devices. There’ll also be a separate chargeable service - iTunes Match - to sync all your music in the cloud.
