UK MVNO giffgaff extends free internet offer but drops unlimited calls package

UK MVNO giffgaff has extended its free mobile internet offer again. Customers can benefit from 100MB of daily data at no extra cost. Instead of finishing in December, the deal will now run until the end of February 2011 because – once again – the implementation of giffgaff’s pricing plan has been delayed.

The company has also dropped its £30 goodybag – the name for its top-up bundles – which offered unlimited calls. It says less than 5% of members were buying it, with high usage making it unaffordable for the network. Average usage exceeded 5000 minutes per month, with a few users exceeding an average of 7 hours of calls every day. In an unusual admission of profitability, the company says some customers were costing it over £500 per month.
