EA buys mobile game company PopCap

Electronic Arts (EA) has announced an agreement to acquire PopCap Games, a US-based company that produces games for mobile phones, tablets, PCs and social network sites. PopCap has produced a number of popular titles including Plants vs. Zombies, Bejeweled and Zuma.

John Riccitiello, CEO of EA, said “EA and PopCap are a compelling combination. PopCap’s great studio talent and powerful IP add to EA’s momentum and accelerate our drive towards a $1 billion digital business. EA’s global studio and publishing network will help PopCap rapidly expand their business to more digital devices, more countries, and more channels.”

More than 150 million PopCap games have been installed and played worldwide. EA is paying approximately $650 million in cash and $100 million in shares for the deal, which is expected to be completed in August 2011.
